Mastering SEL: It’s Like Riding a Bike

When my kids learned to ride bikes, there was no manual, no inspirational speech, and certainly no theoretical knowledge that could compete with those newfangled balance bikes. If you grew up in my generation, you probably remember the clunky training wheels that gave a false sense of security—like a safety net that was more like a trampoline. We thought we were ready to take off, but really, we were just wobbling through life with a little extra help.

Enter the balance bike: a brilliant invention that strips away the pedals, allowing kids to focus on the essential skills of balancing and steering. It's like giving them a backstage pass to the world of cycling without the stress of multitasking. Once kids master balancing on a balance bike, they glide into the next phase of their biking journey, seamlessly transitioning to a two-wheeler like pros.

Now, I know you didn't come here for a bike ride down memory lane—this is about something much deeper. Here’s how balance bikes are like a good social-emotional learning (SEL) lesson: the best SEL experiences are experiential.

Think of training wheels as role-playing. They serve a purpose, sure, but they often lack that authentic connection to real-life experiences. Sure, you can practice empathy or conflict resolution in a controlled setting, but it’s like learning to ride with training wheels—you’re not really getting the full experience.

Driving home content knowledge about SEL is a bit like trying to teach a kid to ride a bike by reciting the physics of balance. Sure, they might know all about gravity and momentum, but until they feel the wind in their hair and the thrill of independence, they’re missing the magic of the ride.

The beauty of balance bikes—and great SEL lessons—It’s all about creating authentic experiences and then reflecting on those moments. A strong SEL lesson will engage every SEL competency, allowing students to connect personally with their learning. A great teacher will guide students in identifying their unique areas for growth, making the journey not just about skills but about meaningful self-discovery.

Let’s ditch the training wheels and embrace the balance bikes of education.#BalanceBikes
